Construction began in early 2008. New lanes were opened to traffic in late 2009. Final work will continue through spring 2010 to apply rubberized asphalt paving.

Project Details:
This segment of Interstate 17 (Black Canyon Freeway) has been reconstructed to add a third general purpose lane and an HOV lane in each direction, separated by a concrete median barrier. Concrete pavement overlaid with rubberized asphalt will be used to reduce traffic noise. Additional noise mitigation (sound walls) has been installed in several locations.
Freeway Management System facilities will also be installed, enabling motorists to receive up-to-date freeway conditions to reduce potential trip delays.
Auxiliary lanes and one-way frontage roads have been installed at specific locations. New freeway lighting is being installed and the freeway will be landscaped consistent with regional landscaping standards.
A new bridge has been constructed on I-17 at Deer Valley Road and I-17 bridges over Loop 101 have been widened to accommodate the new lanes.
Traffic Management During Construction:
ADOT intends to keep two lanes open in each direction during weekday peak periods, wherever possible.
