Project Overview Closures & Restrictions

The Maricopa Regional Supplemental Noise Walls project consists of the design and construction of 11 walls within Phoenix, Peoria, Scottsdale, and Maricopa County.

The Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG), in collaboration with its member jurisdictions has identified 11 locations within the Valley’s freeway system where regional supplemental noise walls will be built using voter-approved (2004) Proposition 400 Funds. MAG advanced this project and referred it to ADOT for design and construction. The study that identified these locations was completed for MAG in June of 2008.

The walls will be constructed in heights ranging from 5 to 20 feet. The walls will be constructed with ADOT’s standard design and color on both freeway and resident side. It is anticipated that the walls will match the material type used on existing walls where additional height will be required.

2009–Late 2010 - Design
Late 2010–Late 2011 – Construction

Multiple wall locations will be constructed simultaneously. Each wall is expected to take 3 to 6 months to complete. Start dates for each wall will be determined once a contractor is selected in late 2010. The process of constructing noise walls will require potential traffic restrictions on freeway lanes, on- and off-ramps, and surface streets which may impact motorists and pedestrians. There is also the potential for night and weekend work. Short-term impacts to area landscaping and community paths are expected throughout the project.

ADOT is committed to providing construction information to stakeholders and welcomes your comments and feedback. For further information and to request weekly project updates, call the project hotline at 602.787.3927 or email valleyfreeways@azdot.gov.

The Maricopa Regional Supplemental Noise Walls project was funded through the half-cent sales tax under the voter-approved Proposition 400.  Extra funding from the Quiet Pavement Prevention Pilot program, funded through Prop. 400, allowed for the opportunity to build these supplemental noise walls.
