Union Hills Traffic Interchange improvements/Beardsley Road Connector  

Project Overview - PROJECT COMPLETE

The project included improvements to the Loop 101 (Agua Fria Freeway) interchange at Union Hills Drive to improve traffic flow, as well as new freeway access at Beardsley Road. The project was constructed to reduce congestion and improve safety and traffic flow at the 75th Avenue and Union Hills Drive interchanges, and enhance Loop 101 access in the northwest Valley. Construction began in early 2010 and was completed in May 2011.

Completed Improvements

  • Union Hills Drive interchange widened to three lanes in each direction with sidewalks on both sides of the bridge
  • Dual-left-turn lanes and right-turn lanes were added to enhance traffic flow for drivers entering Loop 101
  • Loop 101 northbound off-ramp widened to reduce traffic from backing up onto Loop 101
  • Loop 101 southbound on-ramp at 75th Avenue reconfigured to provide access via a new one-way southbound frontage road to Beardsley Road, Union Hills Drive, southbound and northbound/eastbound Loop 101
  • Arizona's first U-turn bridge provides access from 75th Avenue or Beardsley Road to northbound/eastbound Loop 101
  • Widened Beardsley Road between 81st and 83rd avenues
  • Widened a portion of Lake Pleasant Parkway/83rd Avenue near Beardsley Road
  • Constructed a roundabout at 81st Avenue
  • Trail improvements at New River

The Arizona Department of Transportation managed construction of the improvements, with the cooperation of the cities of Peoria and Glendale. The $21.5 million combined improvements were funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, Federal Surface Transportation Program, MAG Proposition 400 regional funds and the city of Peoria.

Beardsley Road Connector Project

  
Olive/91st Avenue Intersection Improvements

  • Description: Widen the intersection of Olive and 91st avenues to provide dual left turn and dedicated right turn lanes at all four legs of the intersection, modify/relocate traffic signals to accommodate the additional turn lanes, repave, and install new medians, curb, gutter, sidewalks, driveways, lighting, landscaping and other related items. This is a city of Peoria project that will is being administered by the Arizona Department of Transportation.

  • Schedule:
    • Phase I - Construction began in March 2010 is expected to be completed in late 2010.
    • Phase II - Landscape establishment to begin in late 2010 and is expected to be completed in early 2011.

Olive Avenue Traffic Interchange Improvements

  • Description: Widen Olive Avenue at Loop 101 to provide three through lanes and dual left turn lanes in each direction to improve traffic flow. The planned work includes constructing retaining walls below the bridge, relocating light poles and traffic signals, installing new pavement, curb and gutter, and other related improvements.

  • Schedule: Construction began April 2010 and is expected to be completed in late 2010.

Multi-Use Path/Bridge - Loop 101 at 63rd Avenue

  • Description: Construct a multi-use path and bridge over Loop 101 at 63rd Avenue. The pathway will link the 63rd Avenue sidewalk and bike path south of the Loop 101 freeway to those on the north side of the freeway. This is a city of Glendale project that will be administered by the Arizona Department of Transportation. 

  • Schedule: Construction began in summer 2010 and is expected to be completed in spring 2011.

  
COMPLETED PROJECTS

Thunderbird Road Traffic Interchange improvements  

  • Description: Make improvements to the interchange at Thunderbird Road to improve traffic flow. The project widened Thunderbird Road to provide three through lanes and dual left turn lanes in each direction.

  • Schedule: Funding for interchange improvements at this location was included in Phase I (2006-2010) of the Regional Transportation Plan. Construction began in fall 2008 and was completed in fall 2009.

Bethany Home Road Traffic Interchange improvements  

  • Description: Construct a new interchange at Loop 101 and Bethany Home Road.

  • Schedule: The southern half of the interchange was completed in August 2006 and the northern half was completed in August 2007.
