Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) Widening Project – I-10/SR 51 to Loop 101

The 11-mile Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) Widening Project has added new eastbound lanes between I-10/SR 51 and Loop 101 and new westbound lanes between Loop 101 and Scottsdale Road.
With the opening of new HOV lanes between Loop 101 and Gilbert Road on a coordinated, multi-project effort, drivers who use Loop 202 have a wider freeway stretching 18 miles between Phoenix and Mesa, a culmination of a 20-month-long effort to improve traffic flow on the Red Mountain Freeway.
Funding for these two projects was provided through the Maricopa Association of Governments' Regional Transportation Plan. The primary funding source is a half-cent sales tax approved by voters in Maricopa County in 2004.
Although new lanes are available for travel, the final completion of the Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) Widening Project is expected in October 2010.

Fall 2010 - Anticipated Completion of Construction.
The process of constructing additional general-purpose lanes on the Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) will require traffic restrictions on freeway lanes, on-and off-ramps, as well as additional restrictions to surface streets that may impact motorists using the freeway as their preferred route of travel. Daytime and nighttime construction activities are expected throughout the project.
The Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) freeway projects currently under construction are funded with the half-cent sales tax under the voter-approved Proposition 400 (file size: 3.6MB).
